education

	excellence in education awards
	Makro in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education launched the Excellence in Education Awards in 2006. The main purpose of the awards was to acknowledge schools from previously disadvantaged areas that delivered excellent matric results or showed visible improvement in their results. In 2008 we exended the partnership to the Western Cape and Kwazulu Natal Departments of Education and at least 33 schools benefited. A total annual contribution of more than R1.425 million is awarded to schools to assist with purchasing educational aids that directly benefit the learner. Our excellence awards have become the biggest event on our CSI calendar and have an impact on the largest group learners. The awards are especially hosted annually in June,youth month, June, to honour the youth of our country.
	tomorrow trust
	The Tomorrow Trust supports the vision of building self sustained, self empowered individuals and realises this vision through assisting orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC’s) in passing grades 0,1,2 and 10,11,12 in the holiday schools programme. Makro,committed to supporting their three year plan for OVC’s in grade’s 10 to 12, awarded the Tomorrow Trust with R500 000 to cover the costs of course material. Together with Tomorrow Trust we hope to make a difference in the lives of these OVC's, their siblings and to the South African society and economy.

feeding schemes

Through the committed efforts of our feeding scheme partners, namely Centurus Colleges Trust, African Childrens Feeding Scheme (ACFS) and the Department of Education (DOE) – Makro has contributed at least R1,4 million which will ensure that learners at more than 15 schools will have at least one nutritious meal a day.

The Centurus Colleges Trust (CCT) runs daily, weekly and monthly feeding schemes at eight schools, feeding over 2,000 financially deprived children. Through CCT, we are also able to give out food packs during the holidays, which help relieve the burden on parents who rely on their children being fed at school on a daily basis. Makro andCCT'S philosophy remains solidly one of assisting communities to help themselves, and a large portion of the feeding donation is going towards the setting up of sustainable vegetable gardens for the schools. Tools, soil, etc have been provided to the schools and the children themselves work in them, thereby taking ownership for the food produced. This approach gives the children a sense of self-worth, as they are now actively involved in providing a solution to the problem of hunger, rather than sitting back and waiting for handouts
