Ideal Dosage
  • Adults and children 12 years and over: 10 ml every 4 hours. Children 6 to 12 years: 5 ml every 4 hours. Children 2 to 6 years: 2.5 ml every 4 hours. Do not exceed 6 doses in 24 hours.

Usage Description
  • Take this medicine by mouth with or without food. Follow the directions on the label. Do not take more of this medicine than directed by your doctor.
Side Effects
  • The following side effects have been reported with the use of guaifenesin: • Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Headache • Dizziness • Drowsiness • Rash • Itching • Hives • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat • Difficulty breathing • Wheezing • Chest tightness • Fast or irregular heartbeat • Seizures • Coma If you experience any of these side effects, stop taking the medicine and talk to your doctor immediately.
How it Works
  • Guaifenesin works by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that works by narrowing blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling and congestion. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that works by blocking the effects of histamine, a chemical that causes allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes.

Alcohol can increase the side effects of this medicine.

  • Guaifenesin may interact with the following drugs: • Anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin • Antidepressants such as tricyclic antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline, imipramine) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (e.g. fluoxetine, paroxetine) • Antipsychotics such as phenothiazines (e.g. chlorpromazine, thioridazine) and butyrophenones (e.g. haloperidol, droperidol) • Barbiturates such as phenobarbital and secobarbital • Benzodiazepines such as diazepam and lorazepam • Carbamazepine • Hydantoins such as phenytoin • Isoniazid • MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine • Methyldopa • Metoclopramide
