SHOUT was founded in 2007 by musicians Danny K and Kabelo Mabalane and is now one of the most recognisable and credible movements against crime and violence in South Africa.
SHOUT has been working on campaigns ranging from rehabilitating the police and their families to building school libraries, helping find missing children and donating to a variety of crime fighting initiatives.
Gift of the givers
Gift of the Givers is the largest disaster response NGO of African origin on the African continent. Gift of the Givers has delivered life-saving aid in the form of Search and Rescue teams, medical personnel, medical equipment, medical supplies, medicines, vaccines, anti-malarial medication, high energy and protein supplements, food and water to millions of people in 43 countries, South Africa included.
Hope Worldwide – SUCCEED
Hope Worldwide’s SUCCEED program is a Makro flagship project. Launched mid-2012 in partnership with Makro, it supports Early Childhood Development Centres and the caregivers that that work within them.
The SUCCEED program (which stands for “Supporting Centres and Caregivers in Early Childhood Development”) seeks to help these caregivers and centres meet the requirements for registration with Department of Social Developments.
Once registered centres are able to access much-needed funding to enable them to fully serve their function to help South African children reach their full potential.
Water Wise - Every drop counts
Water Wise is Rand Water’s environmental brand. For over a decade, this incredibly valuable campaign has been aimed at increasing awareness of the need to value water and use it wisely throughout South Africa.
Changing behaviour at this level requires an ongoing effort, both to spread awareness and to constantly reinforce the message, which is why Water Wise offers free in-depth educational materials, in-school puppet shows, green industry advice and more.
CHOC - Childhood cancer foundation SA
Established in 1979, CHOC is the only organisation in South Africa that provides comprehensive countrywide support for children with cancer, life-threatening blood disorders and their families.
Their comprehensive support improves the well-being and quality of care to children and teenagers with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders through a wide range of services and support.
Kommunity desk company
Makro supports the Kommunity desk company, an organisation which directly addresses a range of critical challenges in basic education such as the lack of basic equipment like school desks. The project seeks to alleviate the challenges which are experienced by underprivileged learners and associated communities.
Makro partners with the Izzi trust to provide a holiday feeding scheme to thousands of learners in Olifantsfontein, Olievenhoutbos and Pretoria East. Makro assists the Izzi trust fill this dire gap by providing learners with a parcel of food to tide them over during the holidays.
Makro also stocks recyclable Izzi trust shopping bags in store. The proceeds from the sale of these bags goes towards the trusts feeding scheme and bursaries.
African Children Feeding Scheme – ACFS
Makro assists the African Children’s Feeding Scheme (ACFS) in their endeavour to uplift and empower communities in Soweto, Kagiso, Alexandra, Thembisa, Daveyton, Kwa Thema and Tsakane.
The ACFS was started in 1945 in Sophiatown by the late Bishop Trevor Huddleston and works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for those hardest hit – in particular orphans and vulnerable children in child-headed households or children in the care of elderly grandmothers.
Makro works with the Tomorrow trust on the Saturday and holiday school programme which helps children improve their academic performance. Makro supports the Junior and Senior Saturday and Holiday School Programme that provides integrated education and holistic support to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Makro continues to provide support to the Tomorrow trust to provide academic and integrated support to 75 children.
Wildlands conservation trust
The Wildlands conservation trust focuses on ecosystem services areas such as forests and land conservation. Makro supports the Trusts’ Clothes for Life initiative which uses the collection and bartering of clothes as way to uplift schools and also plant more trees for the benefit of the environment. Some of these clothes are also donated to charities who need them.
